STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY WITH THE #BLACKLIVESMATTER MOVEMENT FROM INDIA’S CAMPAIGN AGAINST HATE SPEECH

The members of the Campaign against Hate Speech in India have extended their unconditional solidarity with the current #BlackLivesMatter Movement against the racial discrimination and dehumanisation of people of colour.

This statement comes in view of the ongoing movement following the murder of George Floyd by law enforcement officials. The Campaign Against Hate Speech recognises this as a moment in the long and brutal history of extra judicial violence and racial profiling of African Americans built in to the police and juridical system.

The Campaign Against Hate Speech recognises the parallels between the institutional killings of African Americans in the United States of America and the lynchings of Dalits and minorities in India.

The Campaign which comprises of academics, activists, researchers, doctors, lawyers and professionals is committed to ending all forms of discrimination, whether based on religion, caste, class, gender and age, which begins first with the recognition that such discrimination, which may range from police harrassment and intimidation to racial slurs has adverse effects on people’s livelihood, right to food, right to health and is at the basis of practices of social boycott, harrassment, violence and deep psychological consequences.

Campaign Against Hate Speech is a collective of activists, lawyers, academics, professionals, students working to combat hate.
